Nissen, Jack with A. W. Cockerill Winning the Radar War 1939 - 1945 : A Memoir New York, NY, U.S.A. St. Martin's Press 1988 0-312-01535-6 / 9780312015350 First U. S. Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine B/W Photographs and Maps Black paper on boards. Now in clear cover. "World War II was the first 'technological war,' as the development of the atomic bomb and the breaking of the Enigma code demonstrate. Equally important in winning the war was the development of radar, desperately needed to warn of bombings or U-boat attacks. Here, for the first time is the complete drama of the secret race to develop radar, told in the words of one of the key players. Jack Nissen, an electrical 'boy wonder' first started working on radar with the RAF at age eighteen, in 1937. During the war he developed a way to use radar to guide fighter pilots directly, rather than just using it to detect enemy aircraft - a brilliant idea which was soon seen as the key needed to scramble fighters more quickly. In 1942, Nissen volunteered for a dangerous commando mission to obtain German radar equipment at Dieppe so the British could determine how to jam it in preparation for the D-Day invasion, then being planned. Nissen was one of two survivors of the special group; what he found out helped make the Allied victory possible." Price:
