Caine, Hall The Bondman: A New Saga Chicago, Illinois, USA Rand, McNally & Co. Reprint Edition Hard Cover Good No Jacket Red cloth on boards with gilt design, trim, lettering and the top page ends. 357pp. One volume of a trilogy. Owners bookplate on front pastedown. Now in protective wrap. "There is a beautiful Northern legend of a man who loved a good fairy, and wooed her and won her for his wife, and then found she was no more than a woman after all. This old folk tale is half of my story - the play of emotions as sweet and light as the footsteps of the shadows that flit over a field of corn. There is another Northern legend of a man who thought he was cursed and pursued by a troll. He set out to kill it and lo, as he took out his knife, light flashed upon the face of the troll, and it was his own face! This is the other half of my story - the crash of passions as bracing as a black thunderstorm." Price:

Caine, Hall The Woman Thou Gavest Me : Being the Story of Mary O'Neill Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA J.B. Lippincott Company 1913 First Edition, August 1913 Hard Cover Good No Jacket Maroon cloth on boards with gold gilt lettering. Owners name stamped on fep, rear pastedown and bottom page edges. Volume is moderately worn on all edges. Now in protective wrap. "This novel, as its title indicates, is intended to illustrate the place which, through all the ages hitherto, woman has held in relation to man, the place assigned to her by law, custom, and even religion. Mary O'Neill, a devout Catholic, is brought up in a convent in Rome, and then married, before sex has been explained to her, to a dissolute man of rank. On realizing her position she rebels, refuses herself to her husband, but to prevent scandal, continues to live under his roof. Later on, love is born in her, but it is for another and much worthier man. What is she to do? It is a sin to love anyone but her husband, divorce is against her religion. She passes through a great struggle. At length she runs away, a child is born, and then a new struggle of a mother with an 'unwanted child.' Salvation comes to her, without the violation of any law of state or church." On first publication the 'Woman' was much criticized for the frankness of its treatment of a delicate subject, but the criticism has long died down. Price:
