Tan cloth on boards. Volume has a minor bruise on the top of the front cover. Jacket has a shadow on the rear panel from shelving, spine faded. Now in clear cover. "McKay published his first two volumes of poetry in 1912. In that same year he left his native Jamaica for the United States, eventually settling in New York City during World War One. There he continued to refine his literary voice and at the same time became involved in many of the major social and political issues of the day. Although New York remained his home for much of his life, McKay produced some of his most important books while he lived in Europe, the Soviet Union, and North Africa in the 1920's and 1930's. Recognized today as one of the genuine pioneers of black literature in this century, he was an undeniably important predecessor to young writers of the Harlem Renaissance."
