This book is a unique and beautiful collection of historic English crewel designs selected from museums and private collections throughout Europe, dating as far back as the 16th century, many of the most interesting of these pieces are presented here. Crewel work, the art of embroidering with colored wool on linen or cloth ground, uses a twisted two-strand wool thread and comes in a variety of vibrant shades and colors. The art of crewel lies in the shading and contrasting of the wool colors as well as the working of the many kinds of crewel stitches - which together result in embroidery rich in color, texture, and effect."
