Blue cloth on boards. Volume has very vague moisture mark on the top of both cover edges. Jacket has light wear, faded spine. Now in clear cover. From the Preface: "In January of the year 1843 there was published in Paris, in four volumes, a book entitled La Russie en 1839. The author was a French noblemen of distinguished lineage, Astolphe Louis Leonor, Marquis de Custine. The book was an account of the impressions gained and the reflections inspired, by a visit the Marquis had paid to Russia in the summer of 1839. It was at once a sensational success." " Custine and his book was a subject for the Chichele lectures which eminent American diplomat and historian, George Kennan gave at Oxford in 1969 and upon which the present work is based. The lectures were a comparison, of the Russia in 1839 and the Soviet Russia of today. Custine went to Russia to substantiate his belief in government by aristocracy and to seek arguments against representative government. He returned, in his own words, 'the Partisan of Constitutions.' As Kennan points out, this is a one-sided and unbalanced picture; Custine's own personality and the circumstances surrounding his journey, make this understandable. Yet in the longer perspective of history, Custine's perceptions appear close to the truth, New Moscow is but Old Muscovy writ large."
