1 Johnston, Sir Harry Mrs. Warren's Daughter : A Story of the Woman's Movement
New York, NY, U.S.A. The Macmillan Company 1920 Hard Cover Good No Jacket
Green cloth on boards. Owners name on the fep. Volume has a slightly weak rear hinge that looks shiny, as if it was glued at some time. Worn on the edges, some fraying starting at the head of the spine. Now in protective wrap. [The basis for this story is the play written by George Bernard Shaw, titled Mrs. Warren's Profession. Mrs. Warren's profession - that of the keeper of a house of ill-repute, was enough to provoke the Victorian censors, and which further resulted in the closing of the American production of "Mrs. Warren's Profession" after the principals were charged with 'disorderly conduct.' In 1906 the play was allowed to re-open after the Court of Special Sessions ruled that the play was not in violation of the penal law.] From the Preface: "The earlier part of Vivien Warren's life and that of her mother, Catherine Warren, was told by Mr. George Bernard Shaw in his play, Mrs. Warren's Profession, published first in 1898. I have his permission to continue the story from 1898 onwards. To under the sequel it is not necessary to have the play which so brilliantly placed the Warren problem before us. So, I have taken on myself the continuation of the story outlined twenty-three years ago by Mr. Shaw in its late Victorian stage. In justice to Mr. Shaw I should state that the present book is entirely my own, and that though he has not renounced a polite interest in Vivie he is in no way responsible for her career and behaviour. He may even by annoyed at both."
