"Art history has no more remarkable story to offer than the life and artistic achievement of Mary Cassatt. In an age dominated by conventions and prejudices of Victorian society, this young Philadelphian from a conservative upper-middle-class background made her way to Europe and became the first and only American artist to be part of the French Impressionist revolution that was taking place in France. In 1874 she came to the attention of Degas, who invited her to join the Impressionists. Thus began a 40-year association at once-close and stormy - and to this day enigmatic. Cassatt was untypical in her preference for figure painting, dramatic theater scenes, psychologically telling studies of women, and fresh, original mother and child oils, pastels, drawings and prints. Cassatt was at home in the spheres of literature and world affairs and was a brilliant hostess to diplomats, writers, and critics."
